I have some really exciting news!!!!!
For two nights only () and (4:30pm), I'll be performing for the first time ever in my 12 year poetry career a full length slam poetry show in NYC!
The IRT theater is located at 154 Christopher Street #3B, is accessible with ramps and elevators, and will have alcohol available for cheap purchase.
In this production, Kit takes take you with him as he walks back through growing up in Hawaii, growing as a queer and Trans person, and finding and losing love.
Some of the questions Kit considers as this workshop unfolds are where do his queer and immigration stories connect? What's it mean to be intentionally queer? And what does love look like for him as a Trans Asian American??
Kit Yan is a queer, transgender, and Asian American Brooklyn based slam poet from Hawaii. Kit performs theatrical slam poetry pieces about his life as a queer, transgender, and Asian American through stories about family, love, and social justice. Kit has been seen on television programs such as HBO's Asian Aloud, PBS' Asian America and MYX TV.
Kit's poetry has been reviewed in New York Magazine, Bitch, Curve, and Hyphen. Kit's work has been recently featured in Flicker and Spark and Troubling the Line two new queer and transgender poetry anthologies and has a forthcoming book with Transgenre Press.
Kit has toured internationally with Sister Spit, The Tranny Roadshow, and Good Asian Drivers. He is on both the Advocate and Campus Pride's lists of top LGBT speakers.
Some fun facts: Kit is the first ever Mr. Transman, and when he isn't performing he is eating ramen, playing ukulele, and talking story.
"Knockout spoken-word!" -New York Magazine
"Incredible slam poetry" - Curve Magazine
"The eloquence of Kit's spoken-word delivery lies in the anti-racist, anti-homophobic, gender-inclusive, language that ties his lyrics together."
- Bitch Magazine
"Fierce Stories!" -Hyphen Magazine
Fall tour season has started! I’m heading to SUNY Oneonta tomorrow and to Boise State, Dartmouth’s IVQ Conference, and the NASPA (Student Affairs in Higher Education) Conference in Albuquerque! later this year! I’m actively in search of more tour dates across the country, so please get in touch if you have any interest in an event at your school! I’ve got a show with lots of new spoken word poetry about LGBT, Queer, Trans, and Asian American themes and would love to share them! This year in addition to a full length show, I’ve got TWO workshops I’m touring- an open-level slam poetry writing and performance workshop and an advanced level workshop for teams and active poetry crews! I’m excited to be offering these because I’ve found that after I give a workshop on a campus folks have been self organizing events that include more student poetry exhibitions and excursions. Sometimes venues that are out there aren’t as welcoming and inclusive as we’d like them to be as queer people of color so fuck ‘em and let’s make more spaces for ourselves! Hope to see some of you on the road!
